Two people, including an electric rickshaw driver, were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and an electric rickshaw in Gangni upazila of Meherpur.
The accident took place on Thursday around 11:30am in the Olinagar area on the Meherpur–Kushtia regional highway.
The deceased were identified as Arif, an electric rickshaw driver from North Shalika village in Meherpur Sadar upazila, and Afreen, a child.
Gangni Police Station Officer-in-Charge Uttam Kumar Das said a truck collided head-on with an electric rickshaw in the Olinagar area. Arif died on the spot.
Four passengers of the electric rickshaw, including the child, were injured in the accident, he said.
Locals rescued the injured and sent them to Kushtia Medical College Hospital. Afreen later died while undergoing treatment there. The others are receiving treatment at the hospital.
Police reached the spot after receiving information and recovered the damaged truck and electric rickshaw, taking them to the police station.
The truck driver fled the scene after the accident. Police said efforts are underway to arrest him.
