The government has launched a new step to improve the position of women in sports by forming a five member committee focused on safety, equality and empowerment.
The committee will work on removing discrimination against women in sports and creating a better environment for female athletes across the country.
Former national table tennis player and national award winner Jobera Rahman Linu has been named convener of the committee.
The other members are reserved seat Member of Parliament Farida Yasmin, Bangladesh Women’s Sports Association president Sarwat Siraj Shukla, Dhaka University professor Nasrin Sultana and Ministry of Youth and Sports deputy secretary Umme Israt.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports issued the order on June 2. The order was signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Angyajai Marma.
The committee has been given several responsibilities. It will prepare plans to improve the safety, protection and participation of women in sports. It will also work to develop talented athletes and increase the presence of women in leadership roles.
The committee will help promising athletes from the grassroots level receive training and support. It can also recommend legal and institutional assistance when needed.
Another key area of work will be the health, nutrition and mental wellbeing of athletes. The committee will also focus on improving the social position of women involved in sports.
The government has asked the committee to work on reducing the funding gap in women’s sports and ensuring equal financial opportunities for female athletes.
The committee will also promote sports as a tool for women’s empowerment and rights. It will take steps to ensure equality and create a safer sporting environment for women.
Under government instructions, the committee will submit a written report on its activities and progress every two months. It will also be allowed to include experts on specific issues when required.
