A Jubo Dal activist was shot dead and two pedestrians were injured after miscreants opened fire in the capital’s Kafrul area on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Yusuf Ali, 45, a worker of the Kafrul Thana unit of Jubo Dal. The injured pedestrians are Nalam Sardar, 45, and Monir Hossain, 32. Both are currently receiving treatment at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
The incident occurred around 11:30pm on Friday in front of Opex Garments in the E-Block of Mirpur-13 under Kafrul police station.
According to Mamun Mia, a political colleague of the deceased, they were sitting in front of the garment factory as per their daily routine when the attack took place. He noted that three to four individuals passed by them several times.
When Yusuf inquired about their identities, the group initially left the scene. However, they returned shortly after, brandished firearms, and fired indiscriminately before fleeing. Locals gave chase, but Yusuf was found lying on the ground with gunshot wounds, while two passing pedestrians were also hit.
Yusuf was first taken to a local hospital and later transferred to DMCH, where doctors pronounced him dead at approximately 12:30 am. Medical sources indicated that he sustained a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest.
Yusuf, a resident of the West Baishteki area in Kafrul, was previously involved with Kafrul Thana Chhatra Dal politics before becoming an active Jubo Dal worker. His ancestral home is in Shakral village of Uzirpur upazila, Barishal.
Regarding the injured, Nalam Sardar is a roadside vegetable vendor from Nazirpur upazila, Pirojpur; he sustained a bullet wound to the right side of his head. Monir Hossain, a roadside cloth vendor from Shibchar upazila, Madaripur, was shot in his left leg.
Inspector Md Faruque, in-charge of the hospital police camp, confirmed the death and stated that the body has been kept in the hospital morgue for an autopsy. The two injured individuals remain under medical care.
