The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested two men for allegedly defrauding a man of Tk1.3 crore under the pretext of a land deal in Gazipur’s Sreepur area.
The arrests were made around 2:15am on Thursday from Bosila Road in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur.
The arrested individuals are identified as Md Shaheen Kazi, 44, from Shibaloy in Manikganj, and Md Sayedul Islam, 41, from Mirzaganj in Patuakhali. Both currently reside in Mohammadpur.
CID’s preliminary investigation found that the accused gained the victim’s trust by posing as land traders. They claimed they could sell 22 bighas of land in Sreepur and persuaded the victim to make advance payments.
Between 6 April and 25 May 2025, they collected Tk 1.3 crore in several instalments, citing expenses for documents, land office procedures and registration arrangements.
They told the victim that the land registration would take place on 26 May. However, on the day of the supposed registration, the frauds switched off their phones, prompting the victim to realise he had been deceived.
A case was later filed at Darus Salam Police Station under sections 406, 420 and 34 of the Penal Code.
After taking charge of the investigation, CID traced the financial transactions and used technology and victim statements to identify and arrest the duo. Officers seized four mobile phones, four SIM cards, a private car and Tk46,500 in cash from their possession.
CID stated that the land did not belong to the fraudsters and that they had deliberately taken money under a false agreement. During primary interrogation, both men confessed to their involvement.
They have been sent to court, and investigators are working to identify other members of the fraud ring.
