BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s health has become “very critical” and called on people across the country to pray for her recovery.
Speaking to reporters after a special prayer following Juma prayers at the Nayapaltan Central Jam-e-Mosque, Fakhrul said Khaleda Zia had been hospitalised after falling ill and that doctors declared her condition extremely critical on Thursday night.
He said BNP had asked mosques nationwide to offer prayers for her after Juma prayers. “As part of that programme, we prayed at the New Paltan Mosque, seeking Almighty Allah’s mercy for her recovery and good health,” he said.
“We prayed for her complete healing so she can return to the people and continue serving them. Once again, we urge everyone—please pray for Madam’s speedy recovery,” he added.
Fakhrul said Khaleda Zia spent her life fighting for democracy, enduring persecution and imprisonment, and is now undergoing treatment in hospital.
Earlier in the day, at the inaugural session of the biennial council of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), Fakhrul informed journalists of her condition and appealed for prayers.
According to the party, special prayers were held at mosques across the country after Juma prayers seeking Khaleda Zia’s recovery.
Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23 after being diagnosed with infections in her heart and lungs. She is also suffering from pneumonia and is being treated under intensive observation in the Coronary Care Unit, supervised by local and foreign specialists.
