Two held for carrying out mob attack over alleged child murder

Police have arrested two people in connection with a mob attack in Manikganj’s Sadar upazila that left two men dead and another seriously injured following allegations surrounding the killing of a child.

The arrestees were Almas Hossain, uncle of the deceased child Atika Akter, and her aunt Jharna Begum.
They were produced before the court on Tuesday afternoon, with police seeking a seven-day remand.

According to police, tension erupted in Bonparil area of Hatiyara union on 16 April after seven-year-old Atika Akter went missing.

A suspect, Naeem Hossain, was detained in connection with the incident, and based on his information, the child’s body was recovered from a nearby maize field around 9pm the same night.

Following the recovery, anger spread in the area and an agitated crowd allegedly attacked Naeem and members of his family.

During the incident, Naeem’s father Pannu Mia, brother Nazmul, and uncle Fazlur Rahman Babu were seriously injured.

Police later rescued Nazmul and sent him to hospital. Pannu Mia and Fazlur Rahman Babu were declared dead at the hospital, while Nazmul remains under treatment in critical condition.

Manikganj Sadar Police Inspector (Investigation) Aminul Islam said a case was filed by Nargis, wife of deceased Pannu Mia, over the killings and assault.

Based on the case, police arrested the two accused and produced them before the court seeking remand.
