Two Election Commission (EC) officials have been dismissed from their jobs on allegations of taking bribes and making demands in connection with providing National Identity Card (NID) services.
Separate notifications were issued on Thursday dismissing them. The two officials are Faridpur’s Additional Regional Election Officer Mahfuzur Rahman and Cumilla’s Additional Regional Officer Shudhangshu Kumar Saha.
The allegation against Mahfuzur Rahman is that he called an applicant for a hearing regarding the correction of the date of birth on an NID and demanded a bribe of Tk2 lakh, and it has been proven that through negotiation, Tk1.70 lakh was fixed.
There is also an allegation that he canceled the application as he did not receive the bribe. The allegation was proven as the audio recording of the allegation matched his voice in forensic examination.
On the other hand, Shudhangshu Kumar Saha was caught on video by a media professional while accepting illegal money for providing NID service.
Later, on the condition of not releasing the video, he gave that media professional a bribe of Tk29,000. The allegation was proven in the departmental investigation, leading to his dismissal from service.
