Tunisia have reportedly sacked head coach Sabri Lamouchi just one day after their heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The decision ends a brief spell in charge for the 54-year-old. Lamouchi managed Tunisia for only five matches.
His first game brought a 1-0 friendly win over Haiti. However, Tunisia struggled after that result. They scored only one goal in their next four matches. One of those games ended in a goalless draw against Canada in March.
Lamouchi was born in France and holds both French and Tunisian citizenship. During his playing career, he represented France and earned 12 international caps as a midfielder.
His coaching career has taken him to several clubs and national teams. He managed Rennes in France and Nottingham Forest in England. He also spent three years in charge of Ivory Coast and led them at the 2014 World Cup.
Tunisia now face a difficult challenge in Group F. The defeat to Sweden left them at the bottom of the group. Earlier on Sunday, Japan and the Netherlands played out a 2-2 draw, giving both sides an advantage in the race for qualification.
The Tunisian Football Federation has yet to officially confirm Lamouchi’s departure or announce a replacement.
Tunisia will face Japan on June 21 before taking on the Netherlands on June 25 in their final group match. The Eagles of Carthage need strong results in both games to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
