The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has suspended the movement of trucks, covered vans and lorries on highways for six days during the Eid travel period to facilitate smooth travel for holidaymakers and reduce traffic congestion
According to a public notice issued on Sunday and signed by DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, the restriction will be enforced before and after Eid-ul-Azha, from May 25 to 27 and again from May 29 to 31.
The DMP said the measures were taken as more than one crore people are expected to leave Dhaka for Eid, while nearly 30 lakh people are likely to enter the capital during the festive period.
Vehicles transporting sacrificial animals, essential commodities, perishable goods, garments, medicines, fertilizer and fuel will remain exempt from the restriction.
Authorities also banned the operation of buses without valid route permits. Inter-district buses have been instructed to travel directly to their destinations after departing terminals and will not be allowed to pick up or drop off passengers on roadsides or outside approved counters.
As part of the traffic management plan, the road from Abdullahpur in Uttara to Dhaur Bridge via Kamarpara will operate as a one-way route on 25, 26 and 27 May.
Only vehicles leaving Dhaka will be allowed on the route during this period, while inbound traffic has been advised to use alternative roads.
The DMP further requested commuters to avoid several key roads unless necessary, including the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway from Banani to Abdullahpur, the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway from Jatrabari to Signboard, Mirpur Road from Shyamoli to Gabtoli, the Dhaka-Keraniganj road from Fulbaria to Babubazar Bridge, and the Abdullahpur-Dhaur Bridge road.
In separate directives regarding cattle markets, the DMP said buying, selling, loading and unloading of sacrificial animals outside designated market boundaries will not be allowed.
Legal action will be taken against vehicles parked illegally near cattle markets, while mobile courts may be deployed against improperly managed markets.
The police urged city residents, transport operators, drivers and cattle market stakeholders to comply with the directives to ensure safe and hassle-free Eid travel.
