A Dhaka court on Monday barred former lawmaker from Jamalpur-5 Abul Kalam Azad and former additional deputy commissioner of police SM Shibly Noman from leaving the country amid ongoing corruption investigations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Faiz passed the orders following separate petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), according to court bench assistant Riaz Hossain.
According to the ACC’s application, an inquiry is underway into allegations of irregularities and corruption against Abul Kalam Azad.
The anti-graft body told the court it had received credible information that the former MP might attempt to leave the country, which could hamper the investigation.
The court subsequently imposed a restriction on his foreign travel in the interest of a fair probe.
In a separate petition, the ACC sought a travel ban on Shibly Noman over allegations of gold smuggling, involvement in casino operations, abuse of power, and amassing wealth beyond known sources of income.
The commission informed the court that he was still in the country and reportedly trying to leave.
The court granted both petitions, directing authorities to prevent the two from travelling abroad to ensure the investigations proceed without hindrance.
