The court has imposed a travel ban on actress Meher Afroz Shaon and former DB chief Harun-or-Rashid, along with 9 others, in a case filed by her stepmother, Nishi Islam.
On Thursday, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanauallah issued the order in response to the plaintiff’s petition.
Others accused and barred from leaving the country include former ADC Nazmul Islam of DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, Shaon’s father engineer Mohammad Ali, Shaon’s sister Mahin Afroz Shinjon, Shejuti, Sabbir, Subrata Das, Mainul Hossain, and Mokhlesur Rahman Milton.
However, the ban was not imposed on two others among the accused. Police Inspector Saiful Islam Bhuiyan and Sub-Inspector Shah Alam, who are currently out on bail. On April 22, the court issued warrants against the others accused in the case due to failure to appear in court after summonses.
Parvez Shumon, bench assistant of the concerned court, stated that the case was scheduled for a hearing that day. A petition was filed to restrict the accused from leaving the country while the case is ongoing, which the court approved.
Previously, on March 13, Nishi filed a case against 12 individuals at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court, accusing them of attempted murder and assault.
According to the case statement, Shaon’s father, Mohammad Ali, married the complainant on February 21, 2024, settling on a “denmohor” of Tk50 lakh, of which Tk50,000 had been paid in advance. Nishi alleges that Ali had hidden his previous marriage from her, and it was not until much later that she came to learn that Ali had a wife and four children.
When pressed about the matter, Ali would try to avoid the topic, but eventually, was forced to admit the truth, according to Nishi.
Later, on February 28, Shaon’s sister Shinjon and her husband Sabbir went to the plaintiff’s house and threatened her to keep the marriage a secret. On March 4, Ali, feigning illness, asked the plaintiff to come to his home in Gulshan residence, where she encountered his former wife.
The case statement goes on to say that the others accused were responsible for forcibly pushing her out of the house. The following day, Shaon, ADC Nazmul, and others barged into the plaintiff’s house, trying to force her to sign a blank sheet of paper. When she refused, Shaon brutally assaulted her, leaving her unconscious before fleeing.
Later, on April 24, DB Inspector Shah Jalal called the plaintiff to the DB office where, Nishi alleges, Shaon and the others accused assaulted her again.
At the time, DB chief Harun instructed the Officer-in-Charge of Badda Police Station to file a case against Nishi, for which she was subsequently arrested, placed on remand, tortured, and falsely accused of being a drug dealer.
