The prosecution has submitted formal charges against 19 individuals, including former state minister Kamal Ahmed Majumdar, former member of parliament Elias Uddin Mollah, and Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, over crimes against humanity linked to killings in Mirpur during the July mass uprising.
The charges were lodged at the registrar’s office of the International Crimes Tribunal on Monday. Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed the development, saying that the hearing of the case will be held at International Crimes Tribunal-1.
According to Prosecutor Tamim, over 50 innocent, unarmed students and civilians were shot dead on 18 and 19 July, as well as on 4 and 5 August 2024, across several locations in Pallabi and the Mirpur-10 roundabout. The allegations have been brought against members of law enforcement agencies alongside local leaders and activists of the Awami League.
The formal charges detail the roles of the accused in suppressing the July-August mass uprising, outlining specific instances of attacks, shootings, murders, and repression in the Mirpur area.
Whilst the prosecution has disclosed the names of three prominent figures among the 19 accused, the identities of the remaining suspects have not yet been announced.
The prosecution said that following an extensive probe, the investigation agency recently submitted its report to the Chief Prosecutor’s Office. After thorough scrutiny and verification, the findings were formally presented to the tribunal as official charges.
