A man was killed and at least 20 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups, allegedly over establishing local dominance, in Banchharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria.
The incident took place at Shantipur village of the upazila early Monday.
The deceased was Jewel Mia, son of Sentu Mia of Gopinathpur village under Niloksha union in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi.
At least five people sustained bullet injuries during the clash, while around 20 others were injured. The injured received treatment at different hospitals. Police recovered five rounds of bullets, five cocktails and a locally made firearm from the spot.
Police and locals said a long-standing dispute over establishing dominance had been continuing between Azgar Ali Sarker’s group and Sufu Sarker’s group in Shantipur village.
The two groups clashed on 30 June, following which Sufu Sarker’s supporters had allegedly left the area.
Police said that early Monday, people from Narsingdi, led by Sufu Sarker’s grandson Moktar Hossain, attacked their rivals, triggering a clash between the two groups. During the fighting, five to six people were shot.
The injured were taken to Bancharampur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared Jewel dead.
Bancharampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Yasin said the two groups had been involved in a long-running dispute over dominance.
“Clashes broke out between the two groups in the early hours over the dispute. One person was shot dead,” he said, adding that legal action was underway.
The situation is currently under control, the OC said.
