Content creator Tawhid Afridi has been shown arrested in a case filed with Wari Police Station on charges of fraud and breach of trust.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat passed the order following a petition filed by the police on Monday. State counsel Harun‑ur‑Rashid confirmed the development.
Towhid Afridi is the son of Nasir Uddin, chairman of private TV channel MyTV.
Wari Police Station’s Sub‑inspector Md Mahfuzur Rahman produced the accused before court and sought a fresh order to show him arrested in this case.
The petition stated that during interrogation of suspect Nishaduzzaman Nishad, Afridi’s involvement was found in this case. “For the sake of proper investigation, it is essential to show him arrested in this case,” the SI said.
State lawyer Syed Golam Murtaza Ibn‑e‑Islam argued in favour of the petition, while defence counsel Iqbal Mahmud Shovon opposed it. After hearing both sides, the court granted the police request.
According to the case statement, on 13 January 2025, an online fraud gang lured the complainant with promises of employment and contacted her via WhatsApp and Telegram. They persuaded her to invest money in stages, initially returning small amounts to gain trust before taking larger sums.
Later, despite assurances of profit, they misappropriated a total of Tk235,000. The case was filed at Wari Police Station by victim Syeda Ashfa Towa Duti, naming unidentified accused. Afridi has now been shown arrested as a suspect based on investigation findings.
It may be noted that on 24 August last year, Afridi was arrested in Barishal by CID police. He has since been shown arrested in multiple cases and taken on remand. So far, he has been shown arrested in three cases, including one for murder.
