A platform named Sachetan Nagarik Samaj has written to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman demanding the cancellation of Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration.
The organisation’s Member Secretary, Rubiat Fatima Tony, disclosed the information at a press conference held at Police Plaza in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Friday.
Tony, a woman entrepreneur and social media influencer, read out the letter addressed to the prime minister.
She said Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman and the party’s top leaders have repeatedly stated that women cannot serve as party chief, head of government, president, chief justice or head of any institution. She said this reflects the party’s declared policy.
Tony argued that such a stance directly violates Articles 27 and 28 of the Constitution. She added that under the Representation of the People Order, the registration of any political party may be cancelled if it takes a position against gender equality.
She also described the denial of women’s participation in state affairs as an unconstitutional ideology.
Tony said women’s dignity and constitutional rights cannot be subject to political compromise. She urged the government to examine the matter and take prompt legal action to cancel Jamaat’s registration.
She also demanded legal action against Shafiqur Rahman for what she described as derogatory remarks about women.
At the press conference, she warned that Jamaat Ameer must face justice and be compelled to issue a public apology. The organisation also called for a strict legal stance against statements that promote hostility towards women.
Convenor of Sachetan Nagarik Samaj Neela Israfil was present at the event.
