Tom Holland has revealed that football star Erling Haaland never replied to his dinner invitation, calling the experience a “humbling” moment for an actor.
According to Deadline, the Spider-Man star discussed the viral incident during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon while promoting Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Holland admitted he was the one who sent the message to the Manchester City and Norway striker.
Laughing about the incident, Holland said it was the kind of experience actors need to stay grounded.
“I’ll tell you what. That is exactly the type of humbling experience that is important for actors,” he said.
Recalling the moment, Holland joked that he thought he could simply message Haaland and invite him to dinner. However, the footballer never responded.
“Not even a response. Not an excuse, not ‘I’m busy tonight. I’m playing football’. Nada,” Holland said.
The actor said he saw Haaland during the Monaco Grand Prix while watching Lewis Hamilton race and decided to contact him.
“I was at Monaco. I was watching Lewis [Hamilton] race, and I saw him. He was like a hospitality suite across from me, and I just thought I’d shoot my shot. [I] send him a text,” Holland said.
Despite being ignored, Holland praised the footballer, describing him as “an absolute legend”.
The story gained attention after Haaland explained why he did not reply to Holland’s message. Speaking on the Norwegian show A Laget, the 25-year-old footballer said he did not recognise the sender because he does not watch many films.
Haaland said he received a message from someone asking to go for dinner while they were both in Monaco for the Formula 1 event. As he did not know who the person was, he decided not to respond.
Later, Haaland realised the message came from the actor who plays Spider-Man. He laughed about the misunderstanding and said he might need to send Holland a message because he had completely forgotten about it.
