Tom Felton has admitted he had no idea one of his most famous lines as Draco Malfoy had become so iconic. The actor, now 38, revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that the single-word sneer of “Potter” was inspired by teasing from his three older brothers.
“I don’t know how that’s become an iconic thing,” Felton said. “I certainly had no idea.” He explained that his venomous delivery developed naturally and was never planned.
Felton is currently reprising Draco in the Broadway production of ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ at New York City’s Lyric Theatre. He said the famous “Potter” line was added spontaneously during rehearsals and was kept in the play by director John Tiffany. Felton also praised Aiden Close, who plays his character’s son Scorpius Malfoy, for delivering the line even better than he can.
Reflecting on the enduring popularity of the franchise, Felton expressed amazement at the continued fan interest and the expansion of the Wizarding World, including HBO’s upcoming television series. The first season, adapting ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, is set to premiere on December 25.
“I’m thrilled that the Wizarding World is thriving. None of us would have expected people to still be as interested as they were when we finished the films,” he said.
