Police have detained four leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) centered around the funeral prayer (namaz-e-janaza) of its former general secretary, Mahfuzul Haider Chowdhury Roton.
They were detained on Sunday from Takwa Mosque and its adjacent area in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Imdadul Islam Tayeb confirmed the matter to TIMES. However, he could not immediately provide the names and identities of the detainees.
Following news that the janaza of Roton, former central general secretary of the banned Chhatra League, was to be held in front of Dhanmondi Takwa Mosque, several leaders and activists gathered in the adjacent area.
Members of law enforcement agencies were deployed in the surrounding areas of the mosque and around Dhanmondi Eidgah ground.
At that time, Dhanmondi police detained four banned Chhatra League workers present in front of Takwa Mosque. A few leaders and activists from local BNP affiliate organisations assisted the police in detaining the accused individuals.
