Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) has intensified its crackdown on illegal structures and buildings constructed in violation of approved architectural plans across Chattogram metropolitan area.
In a series of mobile court operations conducted on Sunday, authorities levied fined a building Tk20 lakh, sealed two non-compliant buildings, and severed electricity connections to four buildings.
According to CDA officials, mobile court teams inspected seven buildings across key city locations, including Kotwali, Khalifapatti, Abedin Colony, Chawkbazar Kitchen Market, and BITAC area in Pahartali.
During the drive, unauthorised building extensions constructed beyond approved designs were demolished on the spot. In addition, building owners were required to submit formal written undertakings guaranteeing strict compliance with CDA-approved plans for all future construction.
A major violation was uncovered at a property in Chawkbazar’s Abedin Colony. Despite receiving approval for only an eight-story structure, the owners had illegally constructed an eleven-story building. No owners or property representatives were present at the site during the inspection.
Inspectors also found that power was being illegally distributed to tenants throughout the entire building using a single temporary construction electricity meter. While CDA refrained from sealing the building immediately on humanitarian grounds due to resident families, the power connection was promptly disconnected with assistance from the Bangladesh Power Development Board.
The operation was led jointly by Md Manjur Hasan- CDA’s Chief Special Metropolitan Magistrate (Joint District and Sessions Judge), Superintending Engineer, and Chairman of Building Construction Committee-2- alongside Authorised Officer-2 Tanjib Hossain.
Speaking to journalists after the operation, Md Manjur Hasan emphasised that CDA will maintain a zero-tolerance stance against unapproved construction and will continue its eviction drives strictly.
