The Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) has expressed deep concern, outrage, and strong condemnation over the death of a youth, Wahiduzzaman Shamim, who was dragged out of a hospital ward where he was undergoing treatment and beaten to death following allegations of insulting religion in Debhata Upazila of Satkhira.

The rights organisation has demanded a neutral investigation into potential administrative negligence and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

According to media reports, Shamim was initially assaulted on 13 October over allegations of insulting religion before police rescued him and admitted him to Debhata Upazila Health Complex. However, a group of people later entered the hospital, assaulted him inside the ward and dragged him outside, where he was beaten again. He died while being taken to Satkhira for advanced treatment.

HRSS described the attack on a patient inside a hospital, where medical care and safety should be guaranteed, as a grave violation of the rule of law, human dignity and the right to life. The organisation stressed that allegations of insulting religion or committing any other offence did not give anyone the right to take the law into their own hands, subject an individual to mob violence or kill them.

It said alleged offences must be investigated and adjudicated by the relevant legal authorities through due process, rather than by mobs.

The incident has also raised serious questions about administrative responsibilities and security arrangements, HRSS said.

The organisation called for an impartial and comprehensive investigation into how a group of people managed to enter the hospital, assault Shamim again and forcibly remove him despite his earlier rescue by police.

It also demanded scrutiny of the measures taken to ensure his safety and treatment, the response of personnel on duty and any negligence, inaction or lack of coordination among the authorities.

HRSS stressed that accountability must be established through evidence rather than assumptions about responsibility.

The organisation further said tensions arising from allegations or audio clips circulating on social media could never justify vigilante violence.

It urged the administration to take timely action against rumours, incitement and mob attacks while protecting the right of accused individuals to life, safety and medical treatment.

HRSS put forward three specific demands following the killing.

First, it called for a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation into Shamim’s death, identification of everyone directly or indirectly involved in the attacks and prosecution under existing laws.Second, the organisation demanded a thorough examination of the events surrounding his forcible removal from hospital, the subsequent assault and his death.

It said the roles of police, hospital personnel and administrative officials must be investigated, with appropriate legal and departmental action taken if negligence, inaction or abuse of authority is established.

Third, HRSS called for measures to ensure the safety of Shamim’s family and provide them with the legal assistance and protection necessary to pursue justice.
It also demanded regular and transparent public updates on the investigation and legal proceedings to prevent a culture of impunity and maintain public confidence in the justice system.

Reaffirming the state’s responsibility to uphold the rule of law and protect human life and dignity, HRSS said allegations must be dealt with through the legal system, not by mobs.

The organisation stressed that a fair investigation, prosecution of those responsible and accountability for any administrative failures were essential to demonstrate that no individual or group in Bangladesh was above the law.
