Tolkien’s Middle-earth is set for another return in September 2026, with three major releases arriving for The One Ring, the acclaimed tabletop role-playing game based on The Lord of the Rings universe.
According to ScreenRant, Free League will launch the new content through a crowdfunding campaign announced at this year’s Gen Con event. The September release will bring a major campaign expansion, a new bestiary and revised core rules for the game.
The first release, The White Tower and the Hall of Gold, will take players into Gondor and Rohan, described as the last great realms of Men in the west of Middle-earth.
Creatures Strange and Foul will expand the game’s enemies with a bestiary featuring Black Númenórean spies, Haradrim champions and ancient evils from forgotten ages.
The third release, Revised Core Rules, will offer an updated edition of the award-winning game, featuring new cover art by Antonio De Luca and clarified rules. The revised edition will remain fully compatible with previously released supplements and adventures.
The expansion adds to an increasingly busy slate of Lord of the Rings projects. Andy Serkis’ The Hunt for Gollum and Stephen Colbert’s Shadows of the Past have divided fans, while Amazon’s The Rings of Power continues to attract criticism. Meanwhile, Warhorse’s upcoming open-world RPG has received strong support.
Despite the mixed reactions, Middle-earth remains firmly alive across film, television and gaming. The new The One Ring releases will give both longtime Tolkien fans and newcomers another chance to explore the fantasy world.
