Veteran politician, Liberation War organiser, and member of the Awami League Advisory Council, Tofail Ahmed, has passed away. He died at 4pm on Monday while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in the capital. He was 82.
His personal assistant, Monir Hossain, confirmed his death to The Times of Bangladesh.
Tofail Ahmed served as vice president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) before independence. After the country’s liberation, during the Awami League government, he was political secretary to Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
He later served as Minister of Commerce and Industry in the 1996 Awami League government and again as Commerce Minister in 2014. Throughout his long and illustrious political career, he held many important responsibilities.
Tofail Ahmed had been undergoing treatment for various illnesses over the last several years.
Tofail Ahmed’s body has been taken to the Taqwa Mosque in Dhanmondi, where the funeral prayer will be held after Maghrib.
Afterwards, the body will be kept at Square Hospital. From there, the body will be taken to Bhola. The burial will take place on Tuesday.
