Veteran politician and a Liberation War organiser Tofail Ahmed was laid to rest with state honour and deep respect from people across party lines in Bhola on Tuesday.

The veteran leader passed away at 4pm on Monday while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in Dhaka after a prolonged illness. Following his demise, his first Janaza (funeral prayer) was held at the Taqwa Mosque in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, after Maghrib prayers on Monday.

According to the source, his mortal remains were transported from Dhaka to Bhola by helicopter, arriving at 1:35pm on Monday. A vast number of people gathered at the Bhola helipad to receive the body.

Subsequently, at 2pm, the body was taken to the Bhola Government High School grounds in a freezing van, where a smart contingent of the police accorded him a Guard of Honour.

The funeral prayer in Bhola was held after Zohr prayers on Monday at the school grounds, drawing a massive influx of people from all walks of life. The Janaza was led by Maulana Mufti Maziruddin.

Following the conclusion of the rites, the body was taken to his native village, Koralia, in the Dakshin Dighaldi Union of Bhola Sadar Upazila. Tofail Ahmed was laid to eternal rest in the family graveyard, beside the graves of his parents and his wife.
