A fire broke out on the third floor of an eight-storey building housing Metrix Garments in the Degir Chala area of Gazipur on Saturday afternoon.

The blaze started around 2:44pm, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence. The agency received the report a minute later and dispatched firefighting units to the scene.

Firefighters reached the building at around 3pm, about five kilometres from the station.

Nine firefighting units were working to bring the fire under control, with three units from Gazipur Chowrasta Modern Fire Station, one from Konabari Fire Station, three from Gazipur Fire Station and two from Rajendrapur Fire Station taking part in the operation.

Firefighters have safely evacuated 69 people from the building, the Fire Service said.

No casualties had been reported as of the latest update.

The Fire Service said a fresh search would be conducted after the blaze was fully extinguished to ensure that no one remained trapped inside.

The cause of the fire and the extent of damage were not immediately known.
