Akhtar Ahmed, senior secretary at the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat, has announced that three nomination papers have been received for the upcoming presidential election.
One nomination was filed for BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, while two were submitted for the candidate of the 11-party alliance, Col (retd) Oli Ahmed.
The EC secretary shared these details during a press conference held at the Election Commission office on Thursday, following the expiry of the submission deadline. “A total of three nomination papers have been deposited,” he said.
“Among these, two are for the 11-party alliance candidate Oli Ahmed and one is for BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.”
Verification and voting schedule
Scrutiny of the nomination papers is scheduled to take place on 16 August, commencing at 10am. A representative from the Parliament Secretariat will be present during the process to verify the signatures of the candidates.
When questioned regarding the submission of two papers for Oli Ahmed, the secretary clarified that the commission would scrutinise the second paper only if the first one was cancelled.
According to the official schedule, if more than one candidate remains after the withdrawal period, the election for the 23rd President will be held on 20 August. This election is significant as it marks the first time a vote has been required for the presidency since 1991.
Submission details Earlier on Thursday, the Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat, Rafiqul Islam Khan, submitted the first nomination on behalf of the 11-party electoral alliance in the morning, followed by the second at 3pm.
He was accompanied by lawmaker Kamal Hossain. For the second nomination, Mahmuda Mitu of the NCP served as the proposer, while Abdul Baten of Jamaat acted as the supporter.
