The 11‑party opposition alliance, led by Jamaat‑e‑Islami, on Thursday submitted the nomination paper of its presidential candidate Col (retd) Oli Ahmed for the 20 August election.
A delegation headed by Jamaat Assistant Secretary General AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad handed the paper to Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at 11:49am at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon.
The alliance had earlier announced LDP Chairman Oli Ahmed as its nominee. The Election Commission set 20 August for voting, with scrutiny of nomination papers on 16 August and withdrawal deadline on 18 August.
Voting will be held from 2pm to 5pm in the Jatiya Sangsad session chamber. A total of 349 MPs are voters, with one seat, Chattogram‑4, vacant.
This will be the first presidential election in 35 years to involve more than one candidate, making it the first contested vote since 1991. BNP is expected to announce Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as its candidate.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on 24 July, with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad serving as acting president. Under Article 123(2) of the Constitution, the election must be held within 90 days of the post falling vacant.
