Three accused have been shown arrested and sent to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Kotwali Police Station over the incident in which two death-row militants were snatched away by spraying police officers in the eyes at the court.
On Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order.
The accused are Abdus Sabur alias Raju, Khairul Islam alias Jamil and Arafat Rahman.
Defence lawyer Zaidur Rahman said these accused had secured bail from the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court. The case was scheduled for hearing on 30 September, but no steps were taken that day. As a result, their bail was cancelled and arrest warrants were issued.
He said the three accused were already in jail after being arrested in another case, and an application to show them arrested in this case was submitted on 3 December, the scheduled date.
The court fixed Tuesday as the hearing date in the presence of the accused. On the day, the accused were produced before the court, shown arrested in the case and then sent to jail, lawyer Zaidur Rahman said.
According to the case statement, on 20 November 2022, a hearing on charge formation was scheduled at the court of then Judge Mojibur Rahman of the Dhaka Anti-Terrorism Tribunal in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Mohammadpur Police Station.
The case had 20 accused. Two of them, who were on bail, appeared in court.
Six accused had been absconding from the beginning. The remaining 12 accused were produced before the court from jail. That day, the court framed charges against all 20 and ordered the trial to begin.
Around 12:15pm, the accused were being taken from the court to the lock-up at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. When police reached the main gate of the court with the accused, a group of miscreants suddenly sprayed something into the eyes of the police and snatched away two accused, Abu Siddiq Sohel and Moinul Hasan Shamim.
That night, Police Inspector Julhas Uddin Akand of the court’s prosecution division filed a case against 20 militants. So far, 23 people have been arrested in the case.
