Filmmaker Steven Spielberg said in a recent television interview that he believes extraterrestrials have visited Earth and may still be here, as he discussed his forthcoming science fiction film ‘Disclosure Day’.
The Oscar-winning director made the remarks during an appearance on CBS Sunday Morning while reflecting on his long-standing fascination with alien life and science fiction.
Asked whether he believed aliens exist, Spielberg said he was convinced that beings from beyond Earth had already reached the planet.
“Based on the circumstantial evidence of everything that I’ve gathered throughout my whole life and all the testimonies in Congress that I’ve heard, I absolutely think that they have been here and they are here. And who knows, maybe they’ve always been here,” he said.
Despite directing several films centred on extraterrestrial encounters, Spielberg said he has never personally witnessed anything paranormal.
“Isn’t that terrible? Yeah. I deserved it. I deserved a sighting. And I need a sighting. I mean, I’m an ambassador of these guys and they haven’t shown themselves to me. I don’t get that,” he said.
In a separate interview with USA Today, Spielberg reflected on how his views regarding extraterrestrial life had evolved since making ‘Close Encounters’.
“When I made ‘Close Encounters’, I needed a lot of imagination. I believed there was other life out there, although I wasn’t quite sure if it had come here,” he said.
He added that growing access to visual evidence and recorded sightings had strengthened his belief that humanity is not alone in the universe.
“I said, ‘I’m not going to call ‘Close Encounters’ science fiction. I’m going to call it science speculation’. But since the beginning of the 21st century, there’s been more and more access to the actual visual truth. We’re able to confirm our belief by showing what we shot on our devices to other people. It’s just become overwhelming to me that we’re not alone in the universe,” Spielberg said.
The director is preparing for the international release of ‘Disclosure Day’, a large-scale science fiction film centred on a UFO-related conspiracy and efforts to expose the truth about extraterrestrial life.
The film stars Emily Blunt as Margaret Fairchild, a television meteorologist and former journalist who develops unusual abilities following an encounter with non-human life. The cast also includes Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo and Wyatt Russell.
‘Disclosure Day’ is scheduled for international release on June 12.
