Christopher Nolan, Matt Damon and Tom Holland embraced a local tradition with a cup of chai before attending the Indian premiere of The Odyssey in Mumbai on Saturday, offering fans a memorable moment ahead of the film’s red-carpet event.
According to the Hindustan Times, Universal Pictures India shared photographs of the trio enjoying tea at a café before the premiere. The post described it as a quick stop before the big night, showing the filmmaker and actors sipping chai alongside bun maska and a selection of desserts. Other customers at the café were also seen taking photographs of the visiting stars.
The pictures quickly gained attention on social media. Many fans praised the informal moment, while others joked that every Mumbai visit should begin with chai. Some also wondered why actor Robert Pattinson, who stars in the film, did not accompany the group to India.
Speaking at the premiere, Nolan said he had wanted to bring one of his films to India for years. He revealed that the team had originally planned an Indian premiere for Tenet, which was partly filmed in Mumbai, but the Covid-19 pandemic forced those plans to be cancelled. He said it was a thrill to finally make the visit with The Odyssey.
Tom Holland also reflected on the project, describing The Odyssey as a love letter to cinema and its audiences. He said the responsibility of working on the film felt exciting because the story would allow viewers to connect with the emotional performances delivered by Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, as well as the work of Nolan and the entire cast.
The Odyssey features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. The film is scheduled for worldwide release on 17 July.
The film received an enthusiastic response from audiences following its Indian premiere. Its wider box office performance will become clear after its theatrical release.
