Vijay Sethupathi’s hit Tamil thriller Maharaja is heading for a Hollywood remake, with Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey reportedly among the names being considered for the lead.
According to NDTV, producer Sudhan Sundaram confirmed that the makers received an approach for the remake rights after the film’s successful run in China.
A Hollywood agency is now developing the project with an A-list actor in mind, and the film could go on floors next year.
Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, the 2024 thriller follows a barber whose complaint about a missing dustbin takes him to a police station. The seemingly simple case gradually unfolds into a much darker story of crime and revenge.
Sundaram said McConaughey may be among the stars being considered, but the agency will confirm the casting. The Hollywood version has yet to announce its full cast or studio.
