Christopher Nolan’s epic blockbuster The Odyssey has added another milestone to its remarkable box-office run, recording the biggest Tuesday of the acclaimed filmmaker’s career after delivering his highest-ever global opening weekend, writes Collider.
According to industry estimates, The Odyssey earned $21 million at the North American box office on its first Tuesday, surpassing the previous record of $20 million set by The Dark Knight in 2008.
The film has continued its strong momentum following its global debut of approximately $265 million, the biggest opening of Nolan’s career.
Produced on a reported budget of $250 million, The Odyssey is tied with The Dark Knight Rises as the most expensive film Nolan has directed.
The epic has also received some of the strongest reviews of the director’s career.
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a Certified Fresh 94% critics’ score and a 97% Verified Hot audience score, reflecting widespread praise from both critics and moviegoers.
Industry analysts expect the momentum to continue into the second weekend.
If the film earns more than $75 million domestically during its sophomore frame, it will surpass the second-weekend performance of The Dark Knight.
Globally, The Odyssey is now approaching the $350 million mark and is widely projected to cross $500 million worldwide within its first 10 days in cinemas.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and a star-studded ensemble cast.
Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey follows the King of Ithaca on his perilous decade-long journey home after the Trojan War, facing mythical creatures, vengeful gods and seemingly impossible trials as he struggles to reunite with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus.
With its record-breaking box-office performance and overwhelmingly positive reception, The Odyssey is on course to become one of the biggest commercial successes of Nolan’s career and could become the director’s next film to surpass the $1 billion milestone worldwide.
