A student of Tejgaon College, Sakibul Islam Rana, has died from injuries sustained during a violent clash inside the college hostel, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Ashraf Ali, an administrative officer at Tejgaon College, said Sakibul was attacked late on Saturday night when outsiders stormed the hostel. “Sakibul got caught in the fight and was injured,” he added.
Sakibul, a Higher Secondary Science student of the 2024–25 academic year, was admitted to Sohrawardi Medical College Hospital early on Sunday. His condition worsened, and he was moved to the ICU, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday afternoon.
The attack also injured Jannat, a Humanities student of Ideal College for the 2025–26 session. He received treatment at the same hospital.
The hostel superintendent, Mohammad Zahirul Islam, filed a case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station over the incident. He clarified that Sakibul was not affiliated with any student group. “He was an innocent student who got caught in the middle of the clash,” he said.
According to the superintendent, the conflict started over a dispute related to smoking cigarettes outside the hostel. Though it appeared resolved around 8:30pm, more than 200 outsiders later attacked the hostel after 1:30am, injuring several students, including Sakibul.
Some students reported that the clash stemmed from tensions between two student groups linked to drug use. Police are still investigating the case.
