A surge of water from upstream and persistent heavy rainfall have pushed Teesta River 13cm above the danger mark at Dalia point, sparking fresh fears of flooding across low-lying regions of Nilphamari.
At 9am on Wednesday, the water level at Dalia gauging station in Dimla upazila was recorded at 52.28 metres, exceeding the danger threshold of 52.15 metres. The river had been maintaining this level since 6am that morning.
The rising water has already begun to inundate the low-lying areas of several unions. In Dimla upazila, water is entering Purbo Chhatnai, Khagakhari Bari, Tepakhari Bari, Khalisha Chapani, Jhunagachh Chapani, and Gayabari.
Additionally, various areas in Golmunda, Dauabari, and Shaulmari unions of Jaldhaka upazila have reported water ingress.
Dalia Water Development Board official confirmed that the river has been flowing 13cm above the danger level since early Wednesday morning. However, that there is a possibility the water level may recede during the night.
