A 16-year-old boy, injured in a gas explosion at his home in Fatullah, Narayanganj, succumbed to his injuries on Friday afternoon at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, just hours after his father died from the same incident.
The tragic accident has now claimed the lives of two members of the family.
Rakib, 16, passed away around 1:45pm while undergoing treatment, confirmed Shawan Bin Rahman, the residential surgeon at the institute.
His father, Abdul Kadir, 50, who had also suffered severe burn injuries in the explosion, died earlier at 10:45am.
Shawan Bin Rahman stated that Rakib had burns covering approximately 36 percent of his body.
His twin brother, Sakib, 16, and elder brother Mehedi, 17, are still receiving treatment at the institute, with burns on 17 percent and 18 percent of their bodies respectively.
Both remain in critical condition due to injuries to their windpipes.
According to family members and locals, the explosion occurred at around 6:30am on Monday, at Kutubpur-Rakibazar near Shibu Market in Fatullah.
The blast left four members of the family-Abdul Kadir and his three sons-badly burned.
They were immediately rushed to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute for emergency care.
Neighbors reported that the single-story rented home suffered severe structural damage, with doors and windows blown off by the force of the blast.
Residents rushed to rescue the family members, all of whom were severely burned.
Authorities suspect the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak or a malfunction in the refrigerator compressor, although the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.
The family originally hails from Matlab Upazila in Chandpur.
Abdul Kadir was an auto-rickshaw driver, while his eldest son Mehedi worked as a vendor, Sakib in a factory, and Rakib sold street snacks.
At the time of the explosion, the father and three sons were sleeping, while their mother had stepped out to collect water, narrowly escaping the tragedy.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the neighborhood, with relatives and locals mourning the loss of the father and son.
