Taylor Swift has officially broken Adele’s long-standing record, as her new album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ achieves the biggest first-week performance ever recorded.
Billboard reports that in just five days, the album has surpassed 3.5 million equivalent units through sales and streaming, setting a new benchmark in modern chart history.
The record was previously held by Adele’s ‘25’, which debuted with 3.482 million units in December 2015. Swift reached that figure faster than any artist before her, with two days still left in the chart week; and industry watchers expect her total to rise even further before the official Billboard 200 update on Sunday.
Although Adele’s ‘25’ still holds the record for pure album sales at 3.378 million, Swift is closing in fast. ‘Showgirl’ has already sold 3.2 million copies in physical and digital formats, a number expected to climb as she continues to release new versions of the album. Over the week, she introduced several exclusive CD and digital editions featuring acoustic bonus tracks, keeping fan excitement and sales momentum high.
The success of ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ marks another career milestone for Swift, surpassing her previous record of 2.61 million units for The Tortured Poets Department last year. Music analysts say the new album could approach an unprecedented four million units by week’s end, a feat few thought possible in the streaming age.
Swift’s dominance extends beyond the music charts. Her recent concert film, ‘Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl’, topped the US box office with $33 million during its limited three-day run earlier this month.
With both the album and film finding massive success, Swift continues to redefine what a global pop star can achieve, blending artistic vision with unmatched commercial power.
