Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the Family Card programme in Bogura Sadar Upazila on March 10, marking his first visit to the northern district since assuming office as head of the government.

The information was confirmed by BNP Standing Committee Member and Minister for Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs AZM Zahid Hossain.

The government will begin the four-month pilot phase of the programme in 14 upazilas, with the broader objective of gradually bringing two crore families under monthly cash assistance.

Each cardholding family will receive Tk2,500 per month in financial assistance.

During the pilot phase, 6,500 families will be brought under the initiative. The programme will subsequently be expanded to every upazila in phases.

Women from extremely poor, poor and lower-income households across the country will be covered under the scheme.

One woman from each family will be registered as the cardholder, and in each ward all families deemed eligible will receive the Family Card.

If fully implemented, the programme – a key election pledge of the BNP -is expected to cost around Tk5,000 crore per month, amounting to approximately Tk60,000 crore annually.
