BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has expressed his commitment to building non-political, professional, and stronger armed forces for the nation.
During the announcement of the party’s election manifesto on Friday afternoon at a city hotel in Dhaka, he articulated the party’s future defence policy, emphasizing that the military must be kept above all controversy and politicisation.
Tarique, who is the eldest son of former Army chief and president Ziaur Rahman, stated that for the country to possess a truly powerful military, it is essential to focus on professionalism and ensure the forces remain insulated from political influence.
He further proposed the implementation of a “One Rank One Pension” (OROP) policy for retired army personnel.
According to the BNP chairman, only a disciplined, non-political, and modernised defence force can effectively ensure national security and play a significant role in international duties and national development.
The manifesto detailed a comprehensive vision for the military, including the creation of four-dimensional armed forces with credible deterrence capabilities.
Key elements of the strategy involve a national security strategy and holistic planning, alongside a modern defence policy and doctrine. The plan also highlights the need for a strong Air Force, a strong Navy, and robust maritime security.
Additionally, the BNP’s vision includes the development of a domestic defence industry and a strict stance against terrorism, militancy, and extremism through both social and preventive strategies.
Tarique also underscored the importance of establishing a firm framework for democratic civil-military relations to ensure a disciplined and modernised military structure.
