The decision to relocate tanneries from Hazaribagh to Savar was correct because an industry that generates high levels of waste should be located in a suitable area with proper waste treatment facilities, Commerce and Industry Minister Khondkar Muktadir said on Thursday.

The commerce minister made the remark while speaking to journalists after visiting the Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at the BSCIC Leather Industrial City in Savar.

The minister further said it is hoped that an Italian company will be brought in to determine what renovations are needed for the CETP in the future.

He also said the BNP government has taken various initiatives to protect the industry by assisting enterprises that were lost during the relocation of tanneries from Hazaribagh to Savar.

Later, the minister visited various tannery factories and had an open discussion with the owners.

Meanwhile, leather has been entering the tannery factories for the second consecutive day.
