Tajnuva Jabeen, joint convenor of National Citizen Party (NCP), has resigned from the party. She made the announcement in a lengthy post on her verified Facebook page on Sunday.
Tajnuva stated, “I have resigned from NCP today. With a very heavy heart, I inform you that I will not be able to participate in the upcoming national parliamentary election.”
The move comes a day after senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara resigned from NCP. She herself announced that she would contest the upcoming election as an independent candidate.
Tajnuva Jabeen’s announcement follows just one day later.
On Facebook, Tajnuva wrote, “Many of you may think my objection is due to the historical context of the alliance with Jamaat or women’s issues. The reason, more terrible than that, is the process through which this happened.
“Some are labelling this as political strategy, electoral alliance, etc. I would say this is planned. It has been orchestrated to reach this point.”
Mentioning that NCP had only recently called for collecting nominations nationwide, she said it is now forming an alliance with Jamaat for 30 seats.

She added, “They have pushed the matter to the very last moment so that no one can even run as an independent candidate. Tomorrow is the last date for submitting nominations. I, however, have no intention of running independently at this moment. They have made a complete mess and disowned [us] in the blink of an eye.”
The founding member of NCP said, “I am a founder member of this party. Naturally, I am very upset. But I have no other honorable option left before me except leaving this party.”
Alleging terrible politics within the party, she said, “They are so busy doing politics among themselves that they will never be able to engage in a new moderate, Bangladesh-centric politics for the country.”
Expressing apprehension about facing attacks after this post, Tajnuva wrote, “I was supposed to be running around today to submit my nomination, and here I am sitting and writing all this. They say the alliance will last for a month and a half, then they will bounce back to moderation.
“True. They will bounce back and start duplicity and hypocrisy again. The accountability they preach about with frothing mouths – if anyone among them practices it, that person is sidelined.”
Expressing reluctance to come to power through an alliance with Jamaat, Tajnuva Jabeen wrote, “I myself do not feel good leaving this way. But for me, in the year following the mass uprising, it is impossible to accept the leadership of those who, from the very beginning, wanted to become MPs through compromise with those who never wanted this country or this parliament, or who are acting like sycophants to become MPs through their favour. I cannot tolerate this even if I die.”
Tajnuva believes that while one may stay at the centre of power through strategy, it takes capability to build an organisation.
She said, “You will notice, those of us leaving NCP are the ones who have practised the politics of NCP’s so-called new strategy. But we are the ones who have to leave.”
Informing that she will return the donations received from the public for campaigning, Tajnuva said, “Please give me a little time. I will write in detail and update on how I will gradually return it. I will return every single paisa. I am grateful for your support and your love.”
