Election symbols were officially allocated to 36 candidates contesting the 13th National Parliamentary Election across six constituencies in Barishal on Wednesday.
Barishal District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Khairul Alam Suman distributed the symbols at 12:30 pm in the conference room of the deputy commissioner’s office, in the presence of candidates from different political parties and their supporters.
According to local administration sources, the contenders include candidates from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, National Citizen Party, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, and a number of independent candidates.
Following the allocation, several candidates expressed optimism about their prospects in their respective constituencies.
However, some candidates raised concerns during the event, alleging that a level playing field has yet to be ensured for the election.
They also voiced apprehension over a fair poll, citing claims of harassment and threats against party leaders and activists.
Responding to the allegations, District Returning Officer Khairul Alam Suman said all necessary measures had been taken to ensure a fair and orderly electoral environment.
He also said the administration discussed the electoral code of conduct with candidates and their supporters ahead of the symbol allocation.
Official election campaigning will begin on Thursday.
