Train communication between Sylhet and the rest of the country remained suspended for nearly three hours after the engine of the Dhaka-bound Upaban Express developed a fault between Bhanugach and Shamshernagar railway stations in Moulvibazar.
Services later resumed after the situation returned to normal.
Rail movement restarted around 9am on Tuesday after the Upaban Express was hauled to Shamshernagar station using an engine from the Kalni Express. Authorities then restored train operations on the route.
The disruption began around 6am in the East Kalipur area of Shamshernagar under Kamalganj upazila.
While the train was in motion, excessive Mobil oil leaked from the engine, triggering a minor fire. The fault in the engine caused the incident.
Confirming the matter, Kulaura Station Master Roman Ahmed said the incident occurred due to a sudden mechanical fault in the engine.
A replacement engine arrived from Sylhet and recovered the train, bringing it to Shamshernagar station. During the disruption, the Dhaka-bound Kalni Express ran about an hour late. Train movement has now returned to normal, he added.
Sources said the fire spread quickly in the engine after the oil leak, prompting authorities to stop the train and bring the situation under control.
The incident created panic among passengers, though no major casualties were reported. Several hundred passengers travelling to Sylhet faced severe inconvenience.
Passengers of the Upaban Express said the train was brought to Shamshernagar station after nearly three hours using the Kalni Express engine.
They added that uncertainty remains over when the train will resume its journey to Sylhet, leaving them in distress.
