On Sutrapur’s BK Das Lane, a row of century-old British-era buildings stands as silent witnesses to Dhaka’s glorious past. But today, these architectural treasures are gasping for their last breath – and those who inhabit them are living on borrowed time.

Years of utter neglect have reduced these once-grand structures to hollow shells waiting to collapse. Roofs have given way to the elements, leaking with every shower. Cracks snake through load-bearing walls like wounds that will not heal.

The main supporting pillars, their wooden cores long since rotted, now stand exposed: Rusty iron rods and bare bricks bearing the shame of abandonment.

Step inside, and the scene turns into something resembling a horror film. Dark, suffocating corridors stretch endlessly. Deep fissures run along the walls like scars. Broken wooden staircases and crumbling concrete steps tremble with each footfall, threatening to give way at any moment.

The buildings are patently unfit for human habitation. Damp walls weep moisture. Peeling paint reveals decaying plaster. Ceiling fragments and crumbling bricks rain down without warning.

Yet, low-income and working-class families continue to crowd into these death traps, driven by the only thing they can afford: Meagre rent.

For these families, survival comes at a terrible cost. They live each day in the shadow of catastrophe, their sleep haunted by the groaning of tired structures and their children’s laughter drowned out by the constant fear of collapse.

These buildings represent a painful paradox: Heritage worth preserving, yet housing the city’s most vulnerable in conditions that devalue human life. As Dhaka races toward modernity, Sutrapur’s forgotten residents remain trapped in a bygone era, waiting for a disaster that seems inevitable.
