Supporters of BNP leader Aslam Chowdhury have blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. They blocked the road in the Bypass area of Sitakunda upazila around 7:30pm on Monday.
Sitakunda Model Thana’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Majibur Rahman said, “Supporters of Aslam Chowdhury have blocked the highway. The blockade is currently ongoing. Police and members of the law enforcement agencies are on alert to control the situation.”
Local sources report that supporters expressed anger because Aslam Chowdhury’s name was not included in the list of probable candidates announced by the BNP for the upcoming national parliamentary election for the Chittagong-4 (Sitakunda) constituency. Subsequently, they took to the streets in protest, blocking the highway.
The blockade has caused severe traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Traffic has come to a standstill in both directions, causing severe suffering to passengers.
OC Majibur Rahman stated that police are continuing efforts to normalise the situation.
