Steve Carell has revealed that he nearly turned down the role of Michael Scott in the US version of ‘The Office’, despite its eventual status as a television classic.
The American remake of Ricky Gervais’ British series was widely dismissed when it was first proposed, with many in Hollywood advising Carell not to audition. On Amy Poehler’s podcast ‘Good Hang’, he recalled warnings from friends and colleagues, including Paul Rudd, who told him, “Don’t do it, man. Don’t audition.” Even Amy admitted she initially thought, “This is a terrible idea. No one can be as good as Ricky Gervais.”
Despite the scepticism, Carell pursued the role. He avoided watching too much of the original series to ensure his Michael Scott remained unique. “I watched a minute of one and he was so good and so specific and so funny, I thought, ‘If I watch a second more, I’m just gonna go on an audition with that,’” Carell said.
The show’s pilot initially tested poorly, but Carell’s performance helped transform the series. Over nine seasons and 201 episodes, The Office became one of television’s most beloved sitcoms, earning Carell six Emmy nominations and cementing his place in pop culture.
Reflecting on the series, Carell has said he is unlikely to return, noting, “I think it’s maybe best to leave well enough alone and just let it exist as what it was. It was a special thing.”
