BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has called on everyone to remain united in building a humane and democratic country.
He made the appeal at a press conference on Saturday at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka, following the party’s record victory in the 13th parliamentary election.
He also said, “The freedom‑loving and democracy‑loving people of the country have made BNP victorious today. This victory is not of a single party; it is the victory of the common people. From today, we are truly free.”
At the post‑victory press conference, Tarique expressed special gratitude to the 51 political parties involved in the election, including Jamaat‑e‑Islami, the National Citizen Party (NCP), Islami Andolan Bangladesh, and Gono Odhikar Parishad.
He said, “With your spontaneous participation, a parliament and government accountable to the people are now being established.”
Reminding of the difficult responsibility of governing, he added, “We are assuming responsibility at a time when we must begin our journey amid a fragile economy left behind by fascism, ineffective constitutional and statutory institutions, and a weakened law‑and‑order situation. But with the strength of the people beside us, no obstacle can stop us.”
Emphasising accountability and state reform, Tarique said the new government will be fully answerable to the people, with its primary goal being to revive the state and constitutional institutions destroyed under fascism.
He also pledged to ensure public welfare by building a united and prosperous Bangladesh, bringing together all forces of the nation beyond political divisions.
Speaking to the media at the conference, the BNP chief said Bangladesh’s foreign policy will be guided first and foremost by national interests, built on the principle of mutual respect with other countries.
