A 17-year-old boy was killed after being struck on the head with a dumbbell by his younger brother during a dispute at their home in Free School Street area of Kalabagan, Dhaka.
The deceased, Sadman Wasif Supanto, was a Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinee.
Police have arrested his 16-year-old brother, Rafid Arian Shuddho, in connection with the incident.
According to police, the brothers had a quarrel around 9:30pm on Sunday.
During the altercation, Shuddho allegedly hit Supanto on the head with a heavy iron dumbbell, leaving him with severe head injuries.
Supanto was rushed to Square Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The body was recovered from the hospital at around 1am and later sent to Dhaka Medical College for autopsy.
Kalabagan Police Sub-Inspector Shamsul Haque Sumon said the brothers had been living alone following their parents’ divorce in 2021.
Their father, Sirajul Saleqin, lives in Canada, while their mother, Sanjida Akter Mousumi, resides in Middle Badda and works at Mugda Medical College Hospital.
Supanto was a student of Government Laboratory High School and College, while Shuddho is in Class 10 at the same school.
SI Sumon added that tensions over family issues and daily life arrangements may have contributed to the tragedy.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that family disputes and personal grievances likely played a role in this incident,” the officer said.
Police continue to hold the younger brother as they investigate the case.
