Kushtia’s Islamic University (IU) has introduced a designated “special corner” at its central cafeteria for female students who prefer to dine while maintaining purdah. A section of the cafeteria has been enclosed with black fabric to ensure privacy.
Professor Dr. Zakir Hossain, Director of the Teacher-Student Cultural Center (TSCC), explained the initiative, saying, “Several students approached me, requesting a separate space for veiled women. Many female students wish to eat while observing purdah. Considering this, the arrangement was made. Leaders of Consumer Youth Bangladesh (CYB) also suggested such an initiative and extended their support in setting it up.”
He further added, “Just as sitting together at the cafeteria reflects one part of university culture, practicing purdah is also a cultural expression. The open seating arrangements remain available for all, but this initiative ensures that the rights of those who prefer purdah are equally respected.”
On Sunday, IU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah visited the newly set-up corner. He was accompanied by Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Yakub Ali, Treasurer Professor Dr. Jahangir Alam, TSCC Director Professor Dr. Zakir Hossain, along with representatives of Conscious Consumers Society (CCS), its youth wing CYB, and several students.
