In a tragic incident, a man was detained by police after allegedly stabbing his parents to death in Anwara upazila of Chattogram on Saturday.
The incident occurred at Chaitanya Mahajan residence in East Guzra area of Ward No. 3, Haildhar Union.
The deceased have been identified as Swapan Dash Gupta, 65, and his wife, Kalpana Dash, 55. The accused is their only son, 42-year-old Rimon Dash Gupta.
According to witnesses and Tithi Dash, the younger sister-in-law of the deceased Kalpana Dash, Rimon had been struggling with drug addiction for a long time and had previously received treatment at rehabilitation centres.
On Saturday morning, shortly after returning home with his parents, Rimon allegedly attacked his mother with a sharp weapon. When Swapan Dash Gupta attempted to protect his wife, Rimon reportedly stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.
“Upon hearing screams, we rushed to the spot and called for neighbours. We found Kalpana Dash had already died at the scene,” Tithi Dash told reporters. Swapan Dash was immediately rushed to the hospital.
Anwara Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Mahatab Uddin Chowdhury, said Swapan Dash Gupta was brought to the upazila health complex in a critical state. He passed away while preparations were being made to transfer him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for further treatment.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) for Anwara Circle Mahmudul Hasan, said police arrived at the scene and detained Rimon Dash Gupta.
“We recovered the woman’s body from the spot and received news of the man’s death while under medical care. Both bodies are being sent to CMCH morgue for post-mortem examinations,” he said.
The ASP further said that while local reports suggest the killings were related to drug addiction, the exact cause will be determined following a full investigation. He also added that the accused is unmarried and the police will also investigate whether he is suffering from mental illness.
Legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway.
