A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Assistant Commissioner Sohel Uddin to jail after rejecting his bail petition in a fraud and embezzlement case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Naznin Akter passed the order after hearing the bail application in the case.
The plaintiff’s counsel Musleh Uddin Jasim confirmed the matter, saying the court denied Sohel’s plea for bail and ordered that he be sent to jail.

According to court sources, Sohel had earlier secured bail in the case. The trial began last month, and he sought fresh bail during Wednesday’s proceedings.

The court, however, rejected the application. Hearings in two other criminal cases filed against him were also scheduled to begin on the same day.

Case documents mentioned that Sohel, a resident of Faridganj upazila in Chandpur, joined the Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police through the 36th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination in 2017.

He is currently serving as Assistant Commissioner at Kotwali Model Police Station under the Sylhet Metropolitan Police.

According to the prosecution documents, Sohel became acquainted with university student Rifat Jahan Snigdha through Facebook in 2019.

The two allegedly met at Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka on 27 September, 2020, and married on 30 April, 2022, with a dower (commonly known as Den-Mohor) fixed at Tk300,000.

The case records state that Snigdha later learned that Sohel had previously married another woman, identified as Amina Kibria Mishu.

The revelation allegedly led to disputes between the couple.

Snigdha subsequently filed four criminal cases against Sohel, accusing him of fraud, dowry demand, domestic abuse and financial deception.

Court records also show that former Assistant Commissioner of Taxes Tanjina Sathi, who is currently under suspension, filed a separate criminal case against Sohel before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka. She also lodged another case against him with a police station.
