Police recovered six firearms from a cemetery in Alayapur, a border area between Lakshmipur and Noakhali on Sunday.
The weapons included five rifles, and one LG gun were seized during a raid conducted by Chandraganj Police Station in the Purba Bazar area of Alayapur.
According to police and locals, officers launched the operation based on secret information that an organised group had been using illegal firearms in Chandraganj and its surrounding areas for a long time.
With assistance from local representatives and residents, police searched the cemetery and found six brown paper–wrapped packets. Each packet contained a firearm.
Hossain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance), said, “We have recovered six firearms from the cemetery. It is still unclear who stored them there,” he said.
The ASP also added that efforts are underway to identify those involved and take legal action.
